Usage & Purpose

What this tool actually does

CRX Vault fetches a Chrome extension's installer package using the same public update mechanism the Chrome browser itself uses when it installs or updates an extension from the Chrome Web Store. It also converts that package's container format into a plain .zip so the contents can be opened with ordinary archive tools, and it lets you browse those contents locally in your own browser. It does not modify, re-sign, redistribute, or host any third party's extension code — every file you get out of it is unmodified from what the developer published.

Intended purpose

This site is built and operated for:

• Education — learning how Chrome extensions are packaged, structured, and built, including for coursework, tutorials, or self-study.
• Security and interoperability research — inspecting an extension's manifest, permissions, and source to understand its behavior before installing it, or to check it against known vulnerabilities.
• Personal archival and offline review — keeping a local copy of an extension you already use, for your own reference.

It is not intended for bulk scraping of the Web Store, redistributing other developers' extensions as your own, circumventing paid or license-gated extensions, or any use that infringes someone else's copyright or violates Google's own terms for the Chrome Web Store.

Ownership and copyright

Extension source code, assets, and branding remain the property of their original developers and are typically protected by copyright the moment they're published, regardless of whether a license file is included. Being able to technically download and read a file does not, by itself, grant permission to redistribute, resell, or repackage it. If you plan to reuse code you find through this tool, that's on you to clear with the original developer or under whatever license they've published it with.

Your responsibility

You're responsible for how you use anything this tool produces. That includes complying with applicable copyright law, the Chrome Web Store's terms for end users, and any license terms attached to a specific extension. If you operate your own deployment of this project, you're responsible for how it's used by anyone who accesses it.
